Rajasthan has launched an innovative "Village Water Volunteer" (Gram Jal Swayamsevak) scheme, becoming the first district in the state to ensure that every single one of its villages has a designated water volunteer. The coverage of this initiative is comprehensive, extending to all 1,495 villages of the district, with one volunteer appointed per village. A key feature of this scheme is its community-driven and cost-effective model: the volunteers are local residents of their respective villages, ensuring familiarity with ground-level water issues, and they render their services completely free of cost, without receiving any honorarium or financial compensation from the government. In the selection process, preference and priority have been given to experienced individuals, particularly retired persons, who can bring administrative or technical know-how to the role. To equip these volunteers with the necessary skills, the Department of Water Resources is conducting structured training programmes covering both technical aspects (such as water conservation, groundwater monitoring, and infrastructure maintenance) and management-related aspects (such as record-keeping, community coordination, and reporting). This training is being imparted at the block level, ensuring accessibility for volunteers across the district. The significance of this scheme extends beyond local water management—it is positioned as a milestone initiative aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG-6), which focuses on ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. Additionally, it directly supports the state government's long-term vision of "Viksit Rajasthan @2047," contributing to comprehensive water security across the state. For RPSC aspirants, this topic is important under current affairs related to state government schemes, water resource management, and SDG alignment, and may be asked in the context of recent innovative governance models, panchayati raj initiatives, or Rajasthan's progress toward sustainable development targets.
