The Vande Ganga Jal Sanrakshan Jan Abhiyan is a major water conservation campaign launched by the Government of Rajasthan under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma. The campaign commenced on 25 May 2025 (Ganga Dussehra) and concluded on 5 June 2025 (World Environment Day). Its primary objective is to transform water conservation and water management into a mass public movement by ensuring active participation of citizens, government departments, educational institutions, and local communities. The campaign aims to address Rajasthan's recurring water scarcity challenges through sustainable conservation practices and public awareness initiatives. A major focus of the campaign is the rejuvenation of traditional water sources such as baoris (stepwells), wells, ponds, lakes, and tanks. Before the monsoon season, these water bodies are cleaned, repaired, and restored, while encroachments around them are removed to improve their water-holding capacity. These efforts help enhance groundwater recharge and ensure better water availability during dry periods. The campaign also promotes rainwater harvesting by encouraging the effective functioning of rooftop rainwater harvesting systems in government offices, schools, colleges, private institutions, and residential buildings. This reduces dependence on groundwater and strengthens water security. The campaign is closely linked with Mission Haryalo Rajasthan, a statewide tree plantation initiative. Under this mission, indigenous species such as Khejdi, Neem, Peepal, and Rohida are planted on public land, temple premises, roadsides, and schools. These trees conserve soil moisture, prevent soil erosion, support groundwater recharge, and improve environmental sustainability. Public awareness is promoted through Prabhat Feris, Jal Chaupals, essay-writing competitions, and painting competitions. Overall, the campaign integrates water conservation, afforestation, and community participation to achieve the goals of water security, environmental protection, and increased greenery in Rajasthan.
